The Old Courthouse Community Centre receives Victorian State Government funding to provide Neighbourhood House services. We are a member of the South West Network of Neighbourhood Houses that comprise of Casterton, Portland, Hamilton, Camperdown, Warrnambool and Simpson. Neighbourhood Houses Victoria is the peak body that represents the sector.
A Neighbourhood House is a local organisation that provides social, educational and recreational activities for the community in a welcoming supportive environment. There are approximately 360 Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria with at least one Neighbourhood House in just about every town and suburb in Victoria. Neighbourhood Houses are managed by volunteer committees and paid staff. They offer many opportunities for volunteer participation in all aspects of the house activities and management. Activities are generally run at low or no cost to participants.
The centre is an important hub, the committee and staff live locally ensuring our services are coordinated by people who understand and care about their community.
Under the Neighbourhood House banner are the:
- Men’s Shed
- Be Connected – Free online training area with tutor assistance
- Free internet access
- Craft and local produce shop
- Craft and Crochet morning
- School holiday activities
- Community jigsaw
- Kids Corner – toys, computers, books and beanbags
The centre connects the community by offering a wide range of volunteering, social activities. Both buildings are used by the community consistently and we offer photocopying and administration support.
The Men’s Shed would like to welcome new members. New skills and ideas always welcome. The Men’s Shed do a lot of work for the community and surrounding areas.
Volunteer coordination are facilitated through our Social Support Coordinator, Susan Joyce.
